| 摘要 | An interpretation is attempted of the Buddhist doctrinal position regarding participation in slaughter trades such as fishing. Although the taking of life is not compatible with the first precept of Buddhism, the existence of slaughter trades is accepted as being part of social reality. While Buddhist fishermen subscribe intellectually to the doctrinal position, their actual behaviour is determined more by economic advantage than by religious considerations. Younger fishermen subscribe less rigidly to the theoretical position than do older fishermen. It is shown that while Buddhism does not constrain the poor from entering the fishery industry,Buddhist ethics do seem to constrain the rich. Fishermen tend to opt out of the industry once they get rich:the religious factor induces them to act against their economic interests by shifting their investments to other areas of activity where capital returns are lower than in the fishing industry. |
