| 摘要 | Interest among Western psychologists and psychiatrists in Buddhism has been increasing rapidly in recent years. A small but active group of psychologists, psychiatrists and other practitioners have been contributing to a growing literature and an ongoing discussion. Several books, including some excellent edited books, have been published. The present volume is the most recent addition to this list. Edited by John Pickering, this volume contains ten substantial essays. Many of the major authors in this field are contributors. The essays are grouped under five sections: making comparisons; textual fundamentals; towards therapy; psychological theory; and knowing and doing. Each chapter is a valuable independent contribution, which adds to this literature; yet they stand well together in this book, mainly due to the skills of the editor. Unusually for a book such as this, the editor has written a longish preface to each chapter. These pieces are, in their own right, quite illuminating, and certainly act as good preludes to the chapters they introduce. Therapists will find that many of the chapters are of no direct relevance to their work. However, any therapist who wishes to go beyond a narrow practitioner approach to psychological interventions will find the whole book of much value as a pointer to what Buddhist psychology has to offer. As the editor says in the Afterword, ‘broadening and diversification of our theories and methods’ is the action that is needed now. He says: ‘In bringing Buddhism and scientific psychology closer together the authors hope to enrich our view of the mind and to promote sensitive techniques for investigating it’ (p. 250). The chapters, and the editor’s contributions, do just this. On the whole, a very good book which includes many excellent chapters. Those in psychology who are interested, or are potentially interested, in what Buddhist theory and practice can offer to present day psychology, will find this a very rewarding book to read. |
