| 摘要 | This study examines the late painting of Shitao (1642-1707), defined as the work he produced following his renunciation of monastic orders ca. 1696-7. The Introduction briefly treats Shitao's life and art up to 1696. Thereafter, a different area of Shitao's later thematic interests is explored in each chapter: in Chapter One, destiny; in Chapter Two, his immediate environment in Yangzhou; in Chapter Three, specific concerns of his patrons; in Chapter Four, the act of painting; and in Chapter Five, the pictorial craft of resemblance. Since the themes discussed in the first three chapters (directed towards the world) are very different from those under examination in the last two (directed towards painting itself), a short bridging essay, A Note, has been included between Chapters Three and Four. This attempt to map out the full range of the artist's thematic concerns ca. 1697-1707 aims to uncover the underlying reasons for his choices of subject and style. It reveals Shitao to have practised painting as a rich mode of self-cultivation, one which in his late years was the primary means by which he defined his private and public identity. Through painting he came to terms with complex personal circumstances which included: the failure of his ambitions at the capital in 1690-1692, his disappointment with and exit from the Buddhist priesthood, a new involvement with Daoism, the open recognition of desire, his entry into the world of professional painting, the heritage of his Ming imperial background, the experience of aging, and a philosophical and religious engagement with the self. Finally, the study also aims to demonstrate the relevance of these concerns to the wider community from which his friends and patrons were drawn. |
