| 摘要 | The focus of this research is to present and analyse three responses to religious pluralism in Korea. The first response analysed is the elaboration of the term, "One Mind," in Wonhyo's two Commentaries on Awakening of Faith in Mahayana (CAFM), namely, Running Commentary on Awakening of Faith in Mahayana (RCAFM) and Expository Notes on Awakening of Faith in Mahayana (NAFM). Wonhyo develops his central teaching, which is essentially that of the harmonization of conflicting claims, from the theoretical basis of his CAFM. Wonhyo's idea of Hwajaeng, or the harmonization of conflicting claims, is examined in the context of Buddhist pluralism. The second response is that of Won Buddhism, a new and increasingly influential Reformed Buddhism, founded in Korea in the early part of the twentieth century, which is built on the principles of religious unity and harmony. The third response is that of Christianity, whose membership now includes perhaps as much as forty percent of the South Korean population. The Christian response is portrayed in the thought of Catholic and Protestant theologians who are developing a theory for religious pluralism and interreligious dialogue. This dissertation consists of four chapters. Chapter One establishes "One Mind" as an encompassing concept, which serves to overcome all theoretical arguments of Buddhism. Chapter Two demonstrates "One Mind" as a unifying concept, which serves to apply the theory of Hwajaeng to Buddhist ecumenism. Chapter Three establishes Won Buddhism's Irwon (One Roundedness) as a model of religious ecumenism through a comparative analysis with Wonhyo's One Mind. Chapter Four demonstrates that Christian ecumenical theology shares a common basis and goal with Wonhyo's proposal, comparing ecumenical theologians' notions of "theos" and "soteria" with Wonhyo's notion of Mahayana. This study aims to demonstrate the spirit of religious harmony through the comparative analyses of three models: Wonhyo's One Mind, Sot'aesan's Irwon, and the ecumenical Christian theologians' theocentrism and soteriocentrism. Since these three models are considered both the theoretical and practical bases of Hwajaeng, this study will elaborate Wonhyo's One Mind, Sot'aesan's Irwon, and the ecumenical theologians' theocentrism and soteriocentrism in both philosophical and religious ways. |
