| 摘要 | This thesis is an ethno-history of Bodh Gaya, a pan-Asian pilgrimage center in north India. Today, thousands of Buddhists converge on Bodh Gaya due to its association with the Buddha's enlightenment. But this village is not only a thriving international Buddhist center. For due to its inclusion in the pilgrimage network of nearby Gaya, Bodh Gaya draws tens-of-thousands of Hindu pilgrims who come here both to worship Lord Buddha, commonly viewed as Visnu's avatara, and perform ancestral rites called Gaya-sraddha. Before the mid-twentieth century, few pilgrims visited Bodh Gaya, however. Furthermore, until that time, Bodh Gaya's main shrine, the Mahalbodhi Temple, which is now solely associated with the Buddha's "great awakening," was controlled by a Hindu mahanta, who operated it as a Saiva mandir. Finally, many surrounding Hindu sites have recently been associated with the Buddha's biography, and developed to attract Buddhist pilgrims. How and why these changes have occurred is the focus of this work. To trace these developments, I begin with a discussion of nineteenth- and early twentieth-century forces that contributed to the "buddhification" of Bodh Gaya. Here I demonstrate that this process involved British officials, Burmese rulers, Sinhalese Buddhist revival leaders, and high-ranking Indian Congress members. I also argue that the invention of Bodh Gaya as a place associated primarily with the Buddha's enlightenment was influenced by orientalist constructions of knowledge which were integrally linked to the establishment of British-Indian colonial rule. Finally, I detail court cases, international campaigns, and political battles surrounding jurisdiction over the Mahabodhi Temple, and end by discussing a piece of legislation that resulted in the transfer of the Temple to a Hindu-Buddhist committee in 1953. Having provided this historical background, I proceed to my ethnographic section, where I view Bodh Gaya's shared usage through the lens of narrative, politics, and pilgrimage. Included are analyses of current guidebooks, interviews with Gaya-sraddha pilgrims, descriptions of a newly-created Tibetan Buddhist ritual, a discussion of the inscription of Buddhist narratives onto Bodh Gaya's landscape, and accounts of a campaign by Dalit Buddhists to "Liberate the Mahabodhi Temple" from the management committee. Here I demonstrate that the present invention of Bodh Gaya is tied to issues of economy and religious identity, at the local, national, and international levels, and that its construction as a Hindu-Buddhist center continues to give rise to negotiation and contestation revolving around the representation, usage, and management of this site. |
