| 摘要 | Despite more than thirty years of commentary, there is little agreement on the nature of T. S. Eliot's Four Quartets. However, there is an increasing agreement on one important point, that the Quartets are not a monotonous composition and should be listened to with an intercultural interpretation. And the challenge of this thesis in part is to make the readers recognize Eliot's effort in "Burnt Norton." Starting from the research on Eliot's time logic, evaluating all the spiral movement inspired by the Eastern texture, especially by Buddhism, this paper will close with this writer's own Chinese reflection of the ultimate harmony between the Eastern and Western time-consciousness the poet offers. In the final analysis, this research can deny neither Western nor Eastern contributions to "Burnt Norton." It is precisely the intricate connections between Eastern and Western consciousness of time that allow Eliot's "Burnt Norton" to resonate at many levels of meaning. |
