| 摘要 | The dissertation introduces the life and work of Noma Hiroshi (1915-91), one of Japan's most prolific and intellectual post-war novelists, to non-Japanese readers. Though deeply affected by western literature, Noma has been little known outside of Japan. Only one of his novels, Shinku Chitai (Zone of Emptiness, 1952), concerning a rebellious recruit in the Japanese army during World War II, has been translated into western languages. Noma's theory of fiction is shaped by a world view that is a vigorously original synthesis of Asian and western ideas, Buddhism, Marxism, eroticism, and aestheticism. The dissertation focuses on Noma's theory and practice of the Zentai shosetsu (the Total Novel), which is intended to reveal the dialectical process of self-transcendence and historical totalization. Noma's theory evolved as he critically absorbed the work of western authors: most notably the nineteenth-century realism of Balzac, the twentieth-century psychological realism of Joyce, and the philosophical fiction and essays of Sartre. The central problem of research was that of forming a coherent definition, description, and analysis of the Total Novel from Noma's scattered discussions of it, from his interactions with the work of western authors, and from the evolution of his own fiction, most impressively in Saikoro no sora (Sky of Dice, 1959), Waga to wa soko ni tatsu (My Pagoda Stands There, 1962), and his masterpiece, Seinen no wa (Ring of Youth, 1970). Such novels could probably not have been written if Noma's theorizing about the Total Novel had not illuminated physical, biological, psychological, and social dimensions of life and literary art. |
