| 摘要 | The purpose of this work is threefold: (1) to investigate the different types of approach to enlightenment among the six patriarchs, their personal experiences of tun wu as expressed and passed on in their teachings, and the different philosophical ideas about enlightenment as expressed in the foundational texts of the Lankavatara Sutra, the Platform Sutra, and the various surviving works attributed to the first five patriarchs, (2) to interpret key terms in the Lankavatara Sutra and the Platform Sutra in order to facilitate a greater understanding of the origins and development of tun wu, and (3) to lay a solid foundation for a practical guide for analysis, understanding, and practice of Ch'an Buddhism for those who have grown up with a Western perceptual framework. Because there are few published materials in English on the development by the six patriarchs of early Ch'an Buddhism, biographical data relating their lives to their ideas are included. |
