| 摘要 | This thesis presents an alternative history of Buddhism in Thailand, one which looks through the eyes of rural monks and speaks with their voices. It draws primarily on records left by the wandering forest monks (phra thudong kammathan) of the Northeast: autobiographies, biographies, articles in periodicals, and personal interviews. From these diverse and sometimes "unorthodox" sources, a composite picture is drawn of a lively rural Buddhist tradition at a special moment in history, prior to the rampant modernization and the destruction of Thailand's forests which began in the late 1950's. The bulk of the dissertation deals with the wandering monks during the earlier "Forest-Community Period." After setting the wandering-monk tradition in the larger context of Buddhism in Thailand, the dissertation examines nine wandering monks' upbringing, apprenticeships, encounters and trials of maturity, dealings with forest dwellers of various ethnocultural groups and Bangkok superiors, and memories of their teacher, the Lao meditation master Mun. The experiences of the nine wandering monks can be taken as representative of a rural Buddhist tradition that endured throughout the Forest-Community Period for decades after the creation of a centralized state Buddhism in 1902. Isolated from the major social and political changes occurring in central Thailand, rural monks and villagers in the inaccessible Northeast and North continued to follow their local traditions. The official history of Buddhism in Thailand has largely ignored these traditions or misunderstood them by imposing alien standards. Documenting one such tradition is a significant contribution toward a more complete and authentic history. |
