| 摘要 | Many scholars--who have not found consistent criteria for examining the jatakas (stories of the Buddha's former lives) in the Jatakatthavannana--consider these tales to be only marginally Buddhist. Further, they have denigrated these tales for their characteristic associations with popular culture. I demonstrate to the contrary that meaningful criteria can indicate that the ethical meaning of the tales consistently reflects orthodox Buddhist norms. My method is a two-fold one. Firstly, I show that previous analyses of the jatakas have been limited, since the Pali compilations of texts such as the Cariyapitaka and the Nidanakatha which appear to classify individual jatakas according to a Buddhist ethical framework are neither fully consistent with each other, nor with the Jatakatthavannana itself. Secondly, using recent folklore analyses I compare the structure of the Buddhist jatakas with their non-Buddhist versions in the Pancatantra and the Kathasaritsagara. This comparison reveals contrasts concerning the significance of a social and religious dimension in defining the ethical purport of the texts; in particular with regard to distinctive notions of kamma/karma (retributive action) and dhamma/dharma (righteousness or duty). The ethical significance of the jatakas is limited neither to the stated norm that is expressed in the tales themselves, nor that which is mentioned in the Cariyapitaka or the Nidanakatha. My thesis deomonstrates that a structural investigation of the tales of the Jatakatthavannana indicates that these tales are meaningful within a Buddhist framework of reference. Evil and ethical action in the jatakas are both explicit and implicit. The explicit renderings have often been the subject of previous studies but the implicit ethicization can only be determined in a comparison of the form or structure of versions of the tales. I explain that the jatakas are meaningful to the large population of Buddhist societies because they succeed in mediating otherwise complex philosophical concepts through the imagery and metaphor of conventional language. |
