| 摘要 | Available from UMI in association with The British Library. The subject of this study is a community of Western-born Theravada Buddhist monks and nuns in England. New Paradigm qualitative methodologies of cooperative inquiry and ethnography have been chosen as most appropriate to explore their world. Firstly we have examined the factors contributing to individuals becoming interested in meditation and the religious path, and subsequently deciding to join the community by being ordained. Secondly we have described the inward and outward aspects of monastic life, and the experiences of the ordained, as they began living by the rule in a meditative community. We have sought to understand the significance of this whole experience for them, and of the changes they have seen taking place in themselves. Thirdly we have explored some of the changes, challenges and criticisms this religious organisation faces in England, dependent on the laity in a country where Buddhism is not indigenous. We examine the changing status of women in the community, as it becomes established in a society where the attitude to women differs markedly from that in traditional Buddhist countries. Themes arising from this data are related to Western psychology, notably to the self-actualisation ideas of Maslow, and to studies of the effects of meditation and some psychotherapeutic methods on personal change. The religious aspirations expressed by the community are considered in relation to both Eastern and Western concepts of the progressive development of human consciousness, and the notion of the transpersonal is examined. The new paradigm approach recognises the significance of the inquirer's personal process in relation to both the design and conduct of research, and this aspect of acknowledged and explored here. Arising from the study, observations are made on the nature of being and knowing, and the importance of epistemological heterogeneity in any valid study of human experience. |
