| 摘要 | The relationship of fear of death to Intrinsic and Extrinsic religious commitment was studied in Christian and Buddhist populations to test the hypothesis that these relationships are consistent across widely differing philosophico-religious traditions. Subjects were 91 members of one Buddhist, one Congregationalist and three Southern Baptist churches in Honolulu, Hawaii. Fear of death was negatively related to Intrinsic religion and positively related to Extrinsic religion only for Christian respondents, suggesting the inapplicability of the Intrinsic-Extrinsic dimension for Buddhists. Christian groups reported significantly less fear of death and significantly more positive attitudes about death than did Buddhists, suggesting that religious traditions vary in the effectiveness with which they assist their members in confronting death. |
