| 摘要 | This thesis is a cross-cultural study of Naikan, an indigenous Japanese psychotherapy. The Naikan method is a type of meditation that is emerged out of a sect of Japanese Buddhism, a religion which permeates the Japanese social fabric. It is now used as a type of psychotherapy and as a spiritual practice. There are two main focal points in this study: The first is to discuss the Naikan method as a specific framework of creating personal mythology. The second is to describe the centrality of the concept of the mother in creating personal mythology in the Naikan framework along with Japanese cultural distinctiveness. This thesis also attempts to clarify the differences between the Japanese cultural-bound aspects and the more universal aspects of Naikan. The thesis opens with a discussion of the cultural and historical backgrounds of Naikan and the overall idea of the Naikan method as the basis of this study. |
