| 摘要 | My dissertation aims to problematize the traditional notion of artificiality, and offers a new reading of artificiality by situating it in relation to Deleuze's heterogeneous series in difference and repetition, Derrida's iterability, Foucault's illustration of the Chinese system of thought in The Order of Things, and the koan in Zen Buddhism. On the one hand, from the Western philosophical perspective, I explore the double nature of artificiality in post/modern fiction, such as Robbe-Grillet's Jealousy, Kafka's The Trial, Woolfs The Waves, Kathy Acker's Blood and Guts in High School, and Morrison's Beloved. On the other hand, I investigate the relationship between artificiality in Western literature and artificiality in the Chinese Ch'an's Wenda or Japanese Zen's koan, hoping to suggest a possibility of the future mutual assimilation of these two different ways of practice in artificiality. To be sure, this exploration does not mean to totalize the meaning and function of artificiality. However, it may suggest a new way of addressing the issue of artificiality. Further, it may demonstrate with the concrete examples drawn from my research projects how artificiality in narrative can be employed as a unique way of reading post/modern fiction, and apprehending the limitation in our desire for logical intelligibility. |
