| 摘要 | This research examined the historical, religious, and cultural influences on the perceptions and practices of leadership among the Burmese churches in Myanmar. The purpose was to assess the roots of values and modes among Christian leaders in Myanmar, formerly called Burma. To identify the sources of leadership values and their impact upon Christian leaders in Myanmar, ethnographic interview were conducted in the capital city of Yangon, Myanmar. Twenty-one prominent Christian leaders were interviewed with four major questions composed of influences from (1) historical kings, (2) British colonial system, (3) Western Missionaries, and (4) Buddhism and social cultural values. The precedent literature initially suggests that the Burmese society has a rich historical heritage. Ethnographic interviews and data analysis show that the leadership perceptions and practices among church leaders in Myanmar have been adopted from the monarchical values, British colonial values, western missionaries, values, biblical values, and Buddhist/socio-cultural values. The most significant factors which influence church leadership in Myanmar are socio-cultural values, which reflect inherited dictatorial leadership styles from generation to generation. In Burmese society, leadership is seen as a position of power, authority, and control. Cultural expectations and practices reinforce such concepts in the society, which, in turn influence church leadership. Authoritarian leadership style is evident in the society. Although Christian leaders conceptually understand biblical servant leadership, they find themselves compelled to meet cultural expectations. |
