| 摘要 | While many studies have been done examining the relationship between religiosity and marital satisfaction among Euro-Caucasian couples, this researcher was able to find only one study among African couples, and could not locate any similar studies completed with Asian couples. This thesis examined the relationship between religiosity and marital satisfaction, using both qualitative interviews and three questionnaires, with Protestant Christian Chinese American couples in the San Francisco Bay Area. Ten Chinese couples from three Protestant Christian churches completed the Alternate Revised Dyadic Adjustment Scale, the DeJong-Faulkner-Warland Religiosity Scale, and the Edmonds Marital Conventionalization Scale. Results from these questionnaires appeared to uphold results with non-Asian couples. Religious experience, belief and practice appeared to be important in a couple's shared values, daily activities, family life, and commitment to each other. Results indicated a strong relationship between religiosity and marital satisfaction. Of the original ten Chinese Christian couples, five couples agreed to qualitative interviews with the researcher. These interviews covered areas of religiosity including religious beliefs, regular religious practice, any church-related social activities, and the effect of beliefs upon individual and social moral opinions. Areas of marital adjustment included asking about contentment over the span of the relationship (wedding, first year, and currently), how Christian beliefs affected areas of shared values, common interests and activities, sexuality, child-rearing, conflict resolution, things couples wished were different, and attitudes towards divorce and remarriage. Although most couples had both Christian and non-Christian friends, religion appeared to positively affect shared interests, friendships, and social life. More importantly, shared religious rituals and values affected ideas on child rearing, sexuality, conflict resolution and long term marital adjustment. However, there were some limitations of the study. The primary limitation is the size of the sample, because of the small number of couples, replication with a larger number of couples is strongly encouraged. Additionally, some unexpected difficulties occurred with questions about sexuality, which were either unclear or too personally intimate to evoke much response from participants. Some issues were raised about extended family relationships that could have been pursued further, such as how conflict avoidance combined with respect for elders may have affected how religion was viewed in one particular family. Some couples had difficulty articulating how being Chinese affected being Christian. Finally, one couple had some difficulty understanding wording of certain questions because of the language barrier (their primary language was Cantonese) and some unplanned explanations and definitions had to be made for them. Further research in this area might use more explicit questions on items such as respect for elders, ancestor worship, misogyny and preference for patriarchy. Future research might also replicate this study with other Asian ethnicities as well as other faiths such as various sects of Buddhism or Hinduism. An Asian/Western team of researchers might be useful in viewing interview material through different lenses in order to increase overall understanding. Other topics that might be explored are the power of prayer to heal and the effect of being a minority on religiosity. |
