| 摘要 | This survey will prove the hypothesis that Zen, Taoism and Indian Buddhism had a profound impact on Japanese medieval arts such as gardening and Noh drama. Various art will be discussed as evidence for this hypothesis to show the close correlation between Japanese religions and the art forms of the medieval period. The essence of Japanese religions, which emphasize being alone, plainness and self-discipline, corresponds to the independent and practical ethics of the samurai; and these qualities are evident in medieval Japanese art. |
