| 摘要 | This dissertation uses the topic of lineage transmission to examine the life and thought of the Japanese Soto Zen monk Manzan Dohaku (1636-1715) in order to demonstrate the manner in which transmission can serve as an organizing principle in the interpretation of Zen Buddhism. I study Manzan's life and thought by dividing my examination into three parts. The first part presents a biography of Manzan's life and times. In this section, rather than explicating Manzan's place in Tokugawa society, I emphasize how the theme of transmission informed the entire spectrum of Manzan's life. The second part focuses on Manzan's movement to reform lineage transmission in the Soto sect. Divided into three chapters, the first provides background information. The second explores the behind-the-scenes political maneuvering involved in the case, especially how Manzan actively cultivated close relations with leading power figures in the government. The third chapter explains the way in which all the concerned parties put the best public face on what was essentially a de facto decision. Part three discusses other aspects of lineage transmission. Again in three parts, the first examines Manzan's thought on transmission. Manzan thought an individual did not have to have an enlightenment experience in order to receive lineage transmission. I explain how Manzan as a person would have come to that conclusion. The next chapter outlines the legacy Manzan's reform drive had on the Soto sect, especially how his ideas on lineage transmission is thought to have led to the current-day tendency for Soto Zen to be formalistic in nature. The concluding chapter considers how transmission can be used as an organizing principle to understand Zen Buddhism. Arguing for a "hermeneutics of transmission," I delineate four themes which could be used to provide a unified means for interpreting lineage transmission: (1) The role of the Buddha; (2) The role of the student; (3) Authentication of transmission of the experience; and (4) The worship of ancestors. In the end, I suggest scholars of Zen should more closely analyze the role of lineage transmission in the study of Zen Buddhism. |
