| 摘要 | What is the end of a person's life? It is happiness. The study of the necessary end, that is, happiness is implicit in the works of Nguyen Du and explicit in Aristotle. This thesis investigates Nguyen Du's view of happiness mainly through his epic poem, The Tale of Kieu. Nguyen Du's epic poem, which includes Confucianism, Buddhism, Taoism, and ancestor worship, presents the super-psychological and super-moral ways of living. Also, this thesis explores Aristotle's famous Nichomachean Ethics. Aristotle, starting out from basic principles, concludes that happiness consists in being noble and having the excellence of character and thinking. Although having different backgrounds, Nguyen Du and Aristotle agree on most issues relating to happiness. Some of these issues such as human nature, fate, free will, the role of suffering, and the model of education will be addressed in this thesis. |
