| 摘要 | In seventeenth-century Vietnam, Buddhism enjoyed a resurgence of patronage. The socio-political changes associated with this religious revival were also linked to the appearance of new types of religious and secular images. These innovations in the form of sculpture are notable for their high levels of refinement. These sculptures are the subject of this dissertation. The remarkable naturalism and realism of these figures are tied closely to factors that led different social groups to venerate images of different deities. Most examples of these seventeenth-century sculptures are found in the Ninh Phúc temple. Epigraphic records on stone stelae, stupas and bronze bells can also be found in this temple. Such a representative collection of images make the cloister an ideal setting for this project. Additionally, Ninh Phúc temple was also the home of two eminent monks who helped restore Buddhism to its previous high status of social practice. The dissertation has four main sections: Buddhist imagery, roles of prestigious monks, royal patronage, and visual images of Pure Land practice. Section one focusses on the popular lacquered images of old and new Buddhist figures, which are a distinctive feature of religious revival in the 17th century. The circumstances leading to their production and their function within the prevailing religious, political, and social conditions help to explain the appearance of various new types of religious personages in sculpted form. Section two discusses the roles of prestigious monks. The theologies these monks expounded to social elites and to ordinary people influenced the iconography and new sculptural forms of all the religious artifacts in this period. Ultimately, they expressed a new type of a monastic piety. Section three examines the roles of royal patronage at the Ninh Phúc temple. Depending upon the imperial patrons to sponsor the restoration and expansion of monasteries to work the renewal of Buddhist traditions in the villages, the highly regarded monks helped shape dramatic aesthetic changes in the Vietnamese sculptural tradition. Section four analyses the visual images of Pure Land practice that were portrayed through the revolving lotus tower. The nine-leveled octagonal tower of the lotus form depicts wonderful scenes of the Pure Land, and the images of Bodhisattvas and Buddhas. It is a Vietnamese architectural work that is remarkable not only because it expresses cultic images of Pure Land Buddhism, but also because its reveals a religious practice that was truly pervasive in the medieval period. Dated stele inscriptions, epigraphy, historical records, local gazetteers, hagiographies, religious writings, a diverse array of religious objects, and most importantly the sculptures form the documentary foundation of this thesis. Materials written in classical Chinese and nôm which deal directly with the art works are connected to iconographical transformations. These writings are also linked to concurrent changes in the style, meaning. and subject matter of the visual arts in the seventeenth century. Both substantive and methodological dimensions are present in this dissertation by addressing an important body of previously neglected material and by combining art-historical analysis with the socio-historical study of religious movements. |
