| 摘要 | Focusing on texts composed in the Pali language, Part I of this thesis examines four early Indian Buddhist formulations of paths to salvation—namely, the paths of those “liberated by faith” (saddhāvimutta), “liberated by mind” (cetovimutta), “liberated by insight” (paññāvimutta), and “liberated in both ways” (ubhatobhāgavimutta)—which have been relatively unexplored by scholars in the field of Buddhist studies. Furthermore, this study goes on to closely trace and analyze the history of conflicts and controversies within the Theravâda school over the ideal way to pursue the religious live, meditatively and otherwise. Finally, Part II of the thesis seeks to redress our understanding of the role that supernormal “higher knowledges” (abhiññā) have played in Buddhist soteriological schemes. |
