| 摘要 | Long played exclusively in Zen Buddhist settings, this bamboo flute acquired a special place in Japanese music history. It was seen as an instrument of faith and religious instruction，and its manner of tone production and the breathing techniques it required were understood to promote healing. Only in the second half of the 19th-c. was the shakuhachi established as a secular instrument to be used for the purposes of chamber music. |
