| 摘要 | Western ethics and the ethics of Theravada Buddhism seem much alike：killing，lying，stealing，and sexual misconduct are deemed unethical in each. This similarity masks dimensions of Buddhist ethics that are not part of the way philosophers in the West currently understand ethics. In particular，(1) Buddhist ethics emphasizes inner investigation，in contrast to the Western emphasis on external actions; (2) judgments in Buddhist ethics are not universalizable; (3) praise and blame are not an essential part of Buddhist ethics; and (4) in Buddhist ethics there is an epistemological and a prudential answer to the question "Why be moral?" |
