摘要In this paper I discuss Descartes's notion of the self and show how it may be criticized from a Buddhist and a Hindu perspective. Descartes seems to have uncritically accepted the idea that substances and attributes are inevitably connected and, hence,he cannot imagine thinking apart from a thinker. Buddhism's notion of "anatta",combined with Descartes's hyperbolic doubt, suggests that Descartes has gone too far in asserting his existence as a substantial self. The Hindu idea, that the core self is "atman" or spirit, suggests that,by identifying with his mind,he has not gone far enough.
