| 摘要 | The hora of Japan is associated with the Shugendo religion，and especially with the training of mountain priests. The hora is an indispensable means of communication and is believed to defend the body from noxious insects and harmful beasts. The hora of the present Shugendo was linked to the Kinpusenji-shugen-honshu sect，but there is no evidence of the shell trumpet in Japan before the Nara period (710-794). Therefore，it might be only after esoteric Buddhism entered that the hora was used in Japan. It is also possible that the hora was used in the Rinyugaku court dance music of China, imported to Japan in the sixth c. A.D. Today the hora survives only among the Kegon shu sect associated with the ancient，historic Todaiji temple. Style and techniques of hora playing，the notation used for its music，melodic patterns, and the making of the instrument are discussed. |
