摘要
Pirits, or protective Buddhist chants, are held in Sinhalese for private，community，or governmental occasions, lasting anywhere from a few hours to seven consecutive nights. The recorded ceremony was a part of a household memorial service，which lasted from 8:30 pm to dawn. The excerpts are：1) the recitation of a Buddhist formula asking that devotees take refuge in Buddha, the law (dharma)，and the order of monks (sangha). The chief priest chants nine phrases, each answered by a group of monks; 2) the five precepts (pancha sila)，chanted by the chief priest; 3) phrases sung by the priest，at first followed by responses, then becoming an uninterrupted chant; 4) an instrumental ensemble (hevisi) associated with the Sri Lankan Buddhist ritual; 5) the devata aradhana, in which the chief priest invites Hindu deities to attend the ceremony; and 6) the sermon of the Buddha, comprising the Maha Mangala Sutta and consisting of 36 blessings.
