摘要
From 1939 through 1951 Cage composed several works for prepared piano that used time as a structural device. Many of these works were written for dance in collaboration with Merce Cunningham. The structural significance of time for Cage was related to other areas that influenced his composition, including Zen Buddhism and dance. Descriptive analyses are given of Bacchanale,Music for Marchel Duchamp, and selected sonatas from Sonatas and interludes. Time lengths and the square root method -- first used in his Imaginary landscape no. 1 -- form the primary structural techniques in the prepared piano music. The nature of the materials used for preparation and their timbral effects, and charts of the sonatas, are included.
