| 摘要 | The success of intentional communities is often measured by their longevity. Rarely is their success also measured in terms of the community's ability to fulfill the intentions of its members. This study focuses on the importance of identifying those intentions and determining their fulfillment. This investigator participated as a lay practitioner in the Zen Buddhist monastic community of Antaiji in Kyoto, Japan from 1973 through 1976 and returned in 1990 to interview its members. This research examines the intentions of the Antaiji members to stay together and to "return to the original spirit of Zen" through dedication exclusively to meditation. The aspects of the community which supported these intentions are examined. In addition, five fundamental contradictions leading to the eventual failure of the community are identified and discussed. These contradictions are shown to be common in Japanese Zen monasteries and are related to the historic reinterpretation of monastic vows and precepts in Japan. |
