| 摘要 | This dissertation investigates the meaning, role, and treatment of strong negative affect in psychoanalytic and tantric Buddhist psychologies. Bringing tantric transmutational principles into a western psychotherapeutic context is the impetus for this study, and psychoanalytic conceptions of transference and defense are conversely integrated into tantric thinking. Treatment of aggression and jealousy serve as the study's specific focus, and allegiance to the therapeutic value of insight serves to unite the two disciplines throughout the exploration. Three guidelines form the basis for the Methods of this study: (1) attention to key definitions and conceptual principles, (2) the choice of similarly structured general theories of affect in the two traditions, and (3) a consistent style of hermeneutic analysis throughout the project. In the Literature Review, the psychoevolutionary theory of affect by Robert Plutchik forms the foundation for theoretical exploration. Henry Kellerman's psychoanalytic overlays of Plutchik's theory are subsequently discussed. A number of psychoanalytic authors are then investigated. On the Buddhist side, both primary and secondary sources are used to elucidate the tantric theory of transformation, and they provide a comprehensive survey of this historically consistent theory. Hinayana, mahayana, and vajrayana perspectives are continuously woven together in this review. In the Results, a dialogue between the two traditions is conducted, and the overarching perspective is one of theoretical integration. It is found that each tradition has a great deal to say to the other, and several avenues for discussion are highlighted. In the Discussion, a critical review of the project is undertaken, and suggestions for continuing the dialogue are enumerated. The dissertation ends with several personal reflections on the everyday experience of affect. |
