| 摘要 | Buddhist rituals flourished during the Koryo dynasty (918-1392) in Korea. More Buddhist rituals were held during the Koryo period than at any other time in Korean history, a frequency also unsurpassed in China or Japan. Some important Buddhist rituals were unique to Koryo. These rituals were the Buddhist expression of ancient Korean beliefs, such as ancestor and nature worship. They also incorporated traditional indigenous customs, such as the Hwarang (Flower Youth) tradition. By analyzing their types, significance, characteristics, practice, and social role, this dissertation seeks to clarify the nature of Buddhist rituals in medieval Korea. Special emphasis will be given to the Buddhist rituals that were held with conspicuously high frequency and sponsored by the king throughout the dynasty. I argue that Koryo Buddhist rituals primarily were intended for the longevity of the king and worship of the royal family's ancestors, challenging the traditional perspective that rituals functioned to legitimate the exercise of political power: Koryo rituals had little to do with the strengthening of political power because they were held regardless of whether kingship status was strong or weak. Chapter one of this dissertation will examine the important sources for Koryo Buddhist rituals and the methodology used in studying ritual activity. I will also explore the cultural background to Buddhist rituals such as the cosmological views of ancient Koreans, ancestor worship, and geomancy. Chapter two will first discuss some preconditions to a comprehensive understanding of Koryo Buddhist rituals, including the position of Koryo Buddhism in history. To outline all Koryo Buddhist rituals, I will conduct a statistical survey of the Buddhist rituals held throughout the dynasty, focusing on rituals held with high frequency and regularly scheduled rituals. Chapters three to five examine rituals held with noticeably high frequency. Chapter three is devoted to analyzing the Calamities-Solving Ritual (Sojae toryang) and the Humane Kings Assembly (Inwang hoe). By analyzing their data, I seek to trace the textual origin of the rituals to examine their transformation in Koryo. Chapters four and five will investigate the Lantern Festival (Yondung hoe), and the Assembly of Eight Prohibitions (P'algwan hoe), two of the principal Buddhist rituals of Koryo. In particular, special emphasis will be given to the latter because it was the most import of all Koryo Buddhist rituals. |
