| 摘要 | Western psychotherapeutic methodology is currently being utilized by American Buddhist communities to assist Westerners in receiving the depth and breadth of Eastern Buddhist spiritual teachings. This theoretical dissertation addresses the appeal of this interaction for Westerners and a current example of this synthesis is analyzed to highlight cultural implications, common misconceptions, and positive uses of such an approach to Buddhist teachings. Specifically, the interaction between Gestalt Psychotherapy's techniques and Tantric Buddhism's 5 Buddha Family Mandala is examined. A description of methodology is given, proceeded by a delineation of the foundations of Eastern Buddhism and Western Psychotherapy, followed by a currently utilized interactive example, a hermeneutical analysis of this interaction, conclusions, and suggestions for further research. A determination is made that for Westerners, this interaction offers a means of self-transcendence that is not fully addressed by either Western Psychotherapy or Eastern Buddhism alone. Specifically, psychotherapy addresses the Western autonomous individual in a way that creates an opening for the Eastern Buddhist teachings to enter, and the teachings then provide a container for greater transcendence of the autonomous self. |
