| 摘要 | T. S. Eliot's poetry, prose and drama are analyzed with respect to their articulation of eros. The Clark Lectures, Knowledge and Experience, The Waste Land, The Cocktail Party, and The Elder Statesman are primary sources for this analysis. The controlling argument holds that eros is dichotomously interpreted in western culture. Beginning with Plato, one tradition locates the object of eros in a transcendental good, above any finite object. A rival tradition holds that love's proper object is a beloved person. These two traditions are articulations of what is held to be good. Drawing on Charles Taylor, I develop the argument that human identity is dependant on an orientation to some good. Identity can become conflicted if the dichotomous nature of the two erotic traditions--two opposing interpretations of good--is not clearly recognized. My analysis of Eliot suggests unresolved conflicts in the poet's ideologies and personal life due to these conflicting traditions. Additionally, Eliot's syncratization of Mahayana Buddhism, the philosophy of F. H. Bradley, and Christian spirituality generates a problematic epistemology in confronting these issues. |
