| 摘要 | Contemporary Buddhism in America is characterized by lay practice. American Buddhists engage in activities normally only practiced by monastics in Asia. Buddhism in America is further characterized by an integration of the practice into adherents' daily lives. This integration has affected how Buddhism is expressed on an individual scale, and, it has caused the practice to surface in secular areas. Buddhist practice has found expression in American health care, psychotherapy, and social action. The integration of women into positions of power has also contributed to the unique picture of Buddhism in America. The question arises as to whether the teachings have been watered-down in Buddhism's assimilation in the West. Has the deepening of the Dharma been compromised in the spreading of it? Recent publications demonstrate an awareness of this issue in the Buddhist community. This bodes well for a noble and compelling evolution of the teaching. |
