| 摘要 | Images of the aging and aged as appearing in 200 sample works of Chinese landscape paintings throughout its history is studied. Specifically, the foundations of Confucianism, Taoism and Ch'an Buddhism have a profound and positive impact on the way the aged are depicted in their art. This view of the aged places them in a more significant and important position in comparison to westerners' view of the aged. According to my research, there are two types of images of the aged--first, there is the sage or religious figure, who was secluded in the remote mountains and sometimes transformed into an immortal; second is the image of the hermit, closed from the mundane and evil world and enjoying his solitude freely in the harmony of nature. Both images are mystical, powerful and, ultimately, very Taoistic. |
