| 摘要 | Ferrante's study supports the thesis that there is a notion of religious redemption contained within the themes and major characters of most of director Martin Scorsese's professional (non-student) films. This research restricts the notion of redemption to the transformation of personality in the here-and-now, without reference to an afterlife. The study further supports the concept that those filmic transformations occur primarily through secular events. After examining the separate paradigms of redemption in each of the world's six most widespread and influential religions (Primalism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam), Ferrante creates a description of redemption underlying them all, centered on the metaphor of journey. The full description is: an individual's inner journey, in the presence of life's Mystery, from self-centeredness to other-centeredness, or from self-ignorance to self-awareness, or from a destructive perception of self, others, and the world to a life-giving perception. All key terms in the description are defined in detail. Ferrante then applies that description in critical analyses of Scorsese's body of work, concentrating his exploration on the three most critically acclaimed films of the director's career. The method of approach is shot, scene, and sequence analysis that emphasizes the visual, technical elements that define film as a unique art form: editing, montage, mise-en-scene, lighting, camera manipulation, and musical underscoring. Because the study's critical context is auteurist, its conclusions are supported by verbatim commentary of Scorsese and by an examination of the relationship of each of the films to each other. The manner of exposition is qualitative and speculative. The research demonstrates that Ferrante's description of a common notion of redemption is justifiably applied to Scorsese's general ouevre, with few exceptions. The study concludes by placing Scorsese's work within the context of twentieth century America's artistic endeavors as reflective of the culture's self-perception: and it further makes the case that the description of redemption would be useful as an analytical tool for film critics interested in a religiously oriented analysis of secular films. |
