| 摘要 | Buddhism has been rejected and criticized by Western feminists for being non egalitarian. By examining specific doctrine of three movements in the development of Buddhism, (Early Indian, Early Mahayana, and Vajrayana) and by looking at the societies these schools of thought emerged in, I have concluded that the patriarchal society and the cultural practices played a much larger role in promoting and perpetuating the belief that women were inferior, than did the Buddhist doctrine itself. While I was able to find examples of gender-bias and misogyny in early Indian Buddhism, by the time this philosophy had reached Tibet in the form of Vajrayana there was little doctrinal evidence of spiritual inequality. It is my opinion that Buddhism is not inherently unfavorable to women and because there is a built-in flexibility it is a philosophy that could be embraced by Western feminists. |
