| 摘要 | Among the various existing fields of Buddhist studies, the academic discipline of Buddhist ethics has been widely recognized as underdeveloped. After an extensive study of the Pali Nikaya texts, the author arrives at the conclusion that the current state of affairs in this area derives largely from problematic philosophical, terminological, and methodological approaches. Philosophically, conventional perceptions of Buddhism and an almost complete inattention to the distinctive teaching/learning method that is identified by such terms as anupubba-katha (gradual instruction), anupubba-sikkha (gradual training), anupubba-kiriya (gradual doing) and anupubba-patipada (gradual course) in Nikaya texts prevented scholars from capturing Buddhism as a gradual educational system applicable to all, beyond monastic and lay differences. Terminologically, the conflation of two terms related to ethics, sila (ethical/virtuous conduct) and sikkhapada (ethical guidelines), seems to have occurred in the transmission of Buddhism, and has promoted confusion among both traditional and modern scholars in their understanding of these key terms. Due to this terminological confusion, an original and dynamic significance of sila has been lost. Methodologically, the terminological confusion led Buddhologists astray in their search for ethics by allowing them to adopt the precept-oriented methods. The complexity of these problems seems to have prevented them from seeing ethics as one of the three major areas of practice in Buddhist soteriology and allowed them to surmise that Buddhism offered little in the area of ethics. Through an analysis of Nikaya texts, the author demonstrates that Buddhist ethics is a single and gradual educational system based upon a principle that penetrates throughout the different levels of the ethical training. She argues that this principle can be characterized as abstention from harmful actions, which is coherently applicable from the lowest to the highest enlightenment level of ethical development. She demonstrates that the systematic structure of ethics based upon this principle is supported by the principle of Causal Conditionality (paticcasamuppada). In this system, she claims, an essential objective of cultivation of sila is renunciation of self-centeredness (tanha). The goal of Buddhist ethics is the perfection of sila, the elimination of tanha, which equals Nibbana. |
