| 摘要 | History gives us unmeasurable value and knowledge as we head toward the future. The specific history of the growth of the Kayin Baptist Church was a remarkable phenomenon of mission work in Myanmar. It was a historical evidence that motivated the Kayins to strive further for growth and mission. A very positive and powerful factor in bringing the Kayins to Christ has been the religious tradition and folklore of the people. The Kayin Baptist Church began with Ko Tha Byu, the first Kayin convert, in 1828. The foundational factor for growth was found in the sacrificial and zealous services of the missionaries and the indigenous leaders. The Kayins found the fulfillment of their spiritual thirst, traditional expectations and their national growth through the mission of the church. Therefore, the American Baptist Foreign Mission Society took opportunity of the Kayins people movements which led to the Kayin Baptist Church becoming the largest Christian church in Myanmar. However, after Myanmar's independence in 1948, the growth of the Kayin Baptist Church was threatened by nominalism, Buddhism, Burmese nationalism and Socialism. Today, through these hindrances, the Kayin Baptist Church is not as effective as before, and unfortunately, turning against its former beliefs and practices. Thus, the church needs to renew and recommit itself in order to be able to revive its life, mission and be more effective. Some of the historical renewal movements, such as Puritanism, Pietism, Moravianism, Methodism, American Revivalism, East African Revival Movement, American Baptist Awakening and the Korean Church Growth Movement of the 17th to 20th centuries, provide dynamics and principles that can be applied to the growth and expansion of the Kayin Baptist Church. For further developments, it is necessary that the church must study, learn and apply certain renewal models, dynamics of renewal, church growth principles, evangelism strategies and missiological practices. These are to be observed, facilitated, practiced and taught in every aspect of the life of the Kayin Baptist Church in order to renew and revitalize the church for growth and mission. |
