| 摘要 | Cradled in the undulating hills of Hacienda Heights, California is found the Fo Kuang Shan Hsi Lai Buddhist Temple--a spiritual and cultural locus for many ethnic Chinese. The Hsi Lai temple is an extension of the Pure Land school of Mahayana Buddhism transplanted from the Taiwanese homeland. The temple is both a living container for spiritual experiences and a sanctified landscape and lifeworld celebrating the religiosity of a growing American Buddhist community. Research focuses on the question: How has this particular landscape become differentiated from its milieu and transformed from secular space to sacred place? Three intertwining elements are responsible for the appropriation of this space for sacred purposes. These interrelated dynamics are: the influence of ancient Chinese geomantic principles on temple site and orientation; the temple's internal spatial layout, inclusive of sacred objects; and, the presence of the sangha and the reenactment of age-old rituals. Methodology draws from participant observation, Hsi Lai temple literature, and library research. There has been, and continues to be, an ongoing dialectic as East comes West. Hsi Lai's creation of a religious landscape illustrates mechanisms of this synthesizing process as Buddhist religious expression was necessarily modified in the genesis of the temple. |
