| 摘要 | This Master's Thesis examines nine Korean films in light of Korean Buddhist History and the role of indigenous beliefs. The two are intertwined in the social and political struggles of the Korean people as they attempt to address the issues of decolonialization, democratization, reunification, and modernization through the medium of film. The works of Bae Yong-Kyun (Why Has Bodhidharma Left for the East ?, 1993), Yu Hyun-Mok (Rainy Days, 1979; Son of Man, 1980), Im Kwon-Taek (Mandala, 1981; Daughter of the Flames, 1983; Gilsodom, 1986; Aje Aje Bara Aje, 1989; Sopyonje, 1993), and Jang Sun-Woo (Hwa Om Kyong, 1993) are featured. In addition, translated scripts for Hwa Om Kyong, Mandala, and Aje Aje Bara Aje (Come, Come, Come Upward) are included. The research was based in part on Wimal Dissanayake's exploration of the relationship between "History", "Nationhood" and "Cinema" in Asia in his edition of Colonialism and Nationalism in Asian Cinema (1994) as well as the work of Kyun Hyun Kim on New Korean Cinema for the Korean Cinema Homepage published through USC. The results of the research uncovered the usefulness of investigating social and political struggle in Korea through the examination of Buddhist and indigenous belief systems in light of how Koreans address and overcome their troubled history and cultural suffering. To a great extent, cinema was seen as a discourse that performed the nation's unity and provided a medium for overcoming the contradictions between the nation's desires and their actual fractured historical reality. |
