Frederick Streng's contributions to the comparative study of religion lie in his work as translator and interpreter of key Madhyamika texts and as a methodologist in the study of religion. He did invaluable work in his interpretation of Nagarjuna's doctrine of emptiness and then apparently used insights gained in that work to detail an approach to the scholarly study of religion that attempted to chart a middle course between objectivism and relativism.
