Besides monks, the government scribes and scribes of the common people copiedBuddhist scriptures of Dunhuang Manuscripts in the Tang Dynasty.with the differentstatus the formers were given a rigorous training and they did the work carefully andstrictly. The manuscripts they copied were often sent to the locality as the sample. Thelatter in the spontaneous mass groups did the work for money. Temples and shops werethe place for copying Buddhist seriptures.The scribes of the common people were paidlittle to do the work.Viewed in an artistic light,the calligraphy of Buddhist scriptures was obviously un-der the influence of fashion.Most calligraphic works in the styte,fallowed the examplesof wang Xizhi’s and wang Xianzhi’s and were on a high artistic level. The scribes of thecommon people came from the lower level of society. They copied Baddhist scriptureswith a special frame of mind,so their calligraphy was different from the folk calligra-phy.The calligraphy of Buddhist scriptures is left out in the cold now. There are, tworeasons:one is the lower status of the scribes and two is the severe criticism of the peo-ple who view it in the aesthetic light of scholar and gentry. As the important calligraphicwork of the Tang Dynasty, the Buddhist scriptures must bring to our attention and fullunderstanding. |
