| 摘要 | Finishing his musical setting of Gotterdammerung in 1872，Wagner struck Brunnhilde's concluding lines in which, using imagery drawn from Buddhism，she was to have sung of her attainment of nirvana through renunciation of the material world. Instead，omitting text altogether，Wagner chose to rely on music to convey his meaning，causing enduring controversy over philosophical interpretation of Der Ring des Nibelungen. Examples from the drama, as well as musical analysis, argue in favor of a Schopenhauerian and Buddhistic interpretation entailing renunciation of the material world，annihilation of the self，and denial of the will to live and all concomitant personal striving. |
