| 摘要 | In the Shingon sect，which associates music with ritual and magic，the most elaborate chants use ancient，arcane，and magically powerful texts that are interpreted strictly in performance. Other chants, parallel to Western psalmody，are syllabic in declamation and use a cycle of sutra texts that resembles the cycles of psalm Propers in the Roman office. In Shingon liturgy there is a direct correlation between stylistic complexity and psychic import，with melismatic hikyoku，or secret pieces, representing the most elaborate and potent. |
