| 摘要 | An overview of Nepal's musical and cultural diversity with emphasis on Gaine music making. Nepalese societies range in complexity from hunter-gatherer Raute to city dwelling Newar. Buddhism，Hinduism，Shamanism，and local polytheism are important to Nepalese musicians. Contrast between larger cultural traditions may be sharp. Cultural change is evidenced by the loss of indigenous musical forms among the Sunwar，Gurung，Magar，Raute，and Thakali. The north-south direction of Nepalese mountain ridges and three major river systems influences the distribution of musical styles. The major style areas are listed，giving 18 groups that account for 90% of Nepal's musical activity. The instruments and ensembles appropriate for Hindu occupational castes, Lamaistic Buddhists, and Newars are included. The Gaine approach to music is discussed with reference to its origins, composition，audience，status, performanne，and world view. |
