| 摘要 | Study of the esoteric form of Buddhism inherent in Tibetan painting requires a different approach from the interpretation of European art. The elaborate scroll here studied depicts the paradise of Padmasambhava, founder of Tibetan Buddhism，and includes 71 persons, as well as birds, animals, flowers, and temples. The sole purpose of this canonical painting，a thanka, is to assist the devotee into the world of the deity. The musical interest is in the extraordinary appearance of 29 figures -- gods or mortals -- who play a total of 35 ritual instruments, all of which are used today in a Tantric monastery service. The painting is in the George Hibbard Collection，in St. Louis, Missouri. |
