| 摘要 | Despite the passing of the royal courts and their arts practitioners, Thailand has experienced a resurgence of piphat, its traditional ensemble music. Fong Naam,a leading revivalist group, includes renaat (xylophone),linked gongs, flute,pi (oboe),fiddle, and phat (percussion) including the rammana (drum) and ching (finger cymbals). Mahori, another ensemble type, emphasizes string instruments originally brought from China. Piphat evolved from rural folk song and Buddhist ceremonial music; it also participated in the lakhon theater genre. The music was organized into ruangs, or suites, and an improvisational approach called thao produced hundreds of new compositions in a manner reminiscent of Indian raga. The current revival is due in large part to the efforts of the American composer Bruce Gaston, who encouraged the great renaat player Boonyong Ketkhong to form Fong Naam and investigated piphat ensembles throughout Thailand. |
