| 摘要 | In 1988 and 1990, Buddhist stone images and architectural remains were unearthed during the construction of a sports centre in Zhucheng, Shandong. The images fall into two types: the relief and the sculpture. According to the dated inscriptions on part of them, they can be divided into four phases, belonging to the Northern Wei, Eastern Wei, earlier Northern Qi and later Northern Qi——early Northern Zhou respectively. The terminal date calls for further clarification as some elements of the Sui style appear on a few examples of the fourth phase. The carvings, numbering as many as more than 300, are mostly broken, which must have resulted from the abolition of Buddhism and destruction of Buddhist images, a great event in history. More than 50 architectural objects such as tile-ends and drip-tiles were discovered in association with them, imply- ing that remains of Buddhist temple from the Northern Wei to the Northern Qi can very likely be found in the vicinity. Among the represented subjects are Sakyamuni and Maitreya as noted in the inscriptions and presumably Vairocana as shown by painted de- signs on the robes. The images are fine in carving and complex in the representation of dress. Various jewelled necklaces, strings of ornaments and pendents on the images of Bodhisattvas and the dragon’s features on the representations of patron-Bodhisattvas show regionalism in artistic style. The finds furnish valuable data to researching into the re- lations between the Buddhist art of North China and that of South China. |
