| 摘要 | Kaikei, a great sculptor of the Kamakura period, is well known for his extensive production of standing Amida statues, called the An'amiyo Amida. The An'amiyo Amida statues, which present compLetely different iconographic features from the prevailing Jocho mode of Amida, became a canon for the Amida form during the Kamakura and subsequent periods. Previous Kaikei studies often stress stylistic characteristics and chronological development of the works but overlook some important factors manifested in this form of Amida. The significance of the An'amiyo Amida as an icon lies in those overlooked factors, which contributed to its popularity in later periods. Based on a broader viewpoint, this study analyzes the meanings of Kaikei's Amida images in the socioreligious context of the early Kamakura period. The study considers three aspects of the An'amiyo Amida: iconographic characteristics; religious connotation within the development of Pure Land Buddhism of the time; and the significance of Kaikei's patrons. Concerning the name lists (kechien kyomyo) which were enclosed inside the cavities of the works by Kaikei and related sculptors, this study suggests that, to a great extent, Kaikei's An'amiyo Amida figures represent the Pure Land idea newly developed by Honen and his nenbutsu group. The innovative raigo form of An'amiyo Amida was utilized often by the hijiri and fulfilled the needs of the Kamakura people. The An'amiyo Amida shows the interaction of imagery with broader social and religious currents. In this sense, the An'amiyo Amida is a manifestation of the new developments in the early Kamakura period. Kaikei should not be seen simply as a devout Amidist and conservative sculptor supported by elite patrons since he was also an innovator, fully aware of the needs of his time. |
