| 摘要 | Through religion people attempt to define and order themselves and their world. And yet, the world as we know it is always in a state of change, forcing us to constantly re-work our ideas and beliefs. Thus, religion can be viewed as one of the ever-evolving forms of expression of the the human race. In an effort to better understand in practical terms how change in religion happens this study will focus on the Amida Pietist movement of Pure Land Buddhism as it was introduced by Honen in the Kamakura era of early Feudal Japan. It shall show how Honen's unique interpretation was influenced by the social, political, and cultural change taking place around him. It shall further show how his uniquely appropriate response to those forces, in the form of new and deeper interpretations of Amidaism, were so deeply appreciated by his fellow countrymen that after his death his teachings were molded into the largest sect in all of Japan. |
